We get asked this question a lot, so we thought we would provide a bit of guidance. If you want to introduce your kids to motorbike riding, up until now, petrol or gas-powered bikes really have been the only choice.

One of the biggest benefits of electric bikes, also known as e-bikes, is the (lack of) noise. Electric bikes are almost silent in operation which is a huge advantage for those living in suburban built up areas where backyard space is limited. Being so quiet, they can be ridden in a back yard with little impact on your neighbours. Another advantage of noise elimination is the extended time windows when your kids can ride. Early mornings and evenings are great times for riding if you’re not disturbing your neighbourhood!

Recharging your electric motorbike

The next advantage of electric bikes is not having to keep fuel at home. With a gas-powered motorbike, a jerrycan needs to be regularly filled and kept at home with fresh fuel. The key here is “fresh” as fuel has a limited storage time, and the longer it sits the more of the higher octanes evaporate and it ‘goes off’ making the bike difficult or impossible to start.

In contrast, electric bikes just need to have their battery topped up every couple of weeks. Provided you have maintained your battery over storage periods, it is only a matter of key on and go. It is important to note if you leave an electric battery not charged for an extended period, it will deteriorate potentially to the point where you may not be able to recharge the battery at all. For that reason, you do NEED to maintain a certain level of charge over the storage period otherwise a replacement battery may be required.

Are electric bikes easy to maintain?

Make no mistake, electric bikes are not maintenance free however they need a lot less maintenance than their petrol brothers. Electric bikes have no spark plugs, engine oil, air filters, valves or exhaust systems and so have significantly less complexity when it comes to maintenance. However, tyre pressures, wheels and bearings need to be checked along with the drive chain which needs cleaning and oiling.

Regular safety inspection of the frame and controls is required but all in all, there’s less consumables, less waste and more time to enjoy riding.

What is the running time of electric bikes?

Many parents worry that with electric bikes only run for a short period of time and then need hours for recharging. The great news is that with battery technology improving rapidly, this is simply no longer the case. All our ECR electric bikes feature lithium batteries for extended use and high performance.

A bike like the Crossfire ECR1500 will provide your kids with several hours of fun on a single charge and recharge in around 4 hours. In most cases the kids get tired of riding well before they run out of battery.
